Passing of Peter Pritchard
Senior supporters who attended the Cavan v Fermanagh game on Sunday week last in Kingspan Breffni were saddened when the Co Board PRO announced over the loudspeaker, that there would be a minute’s silence for Peter Pritchard who had passed away. His passing severs another link with those great Cavan teams of the 1960s. Those that remember Peter immediately recalled the impact he made in the Ulster final in 1964 when he was introduced into the Cavan forward line in the second half and he scored two goals which ensured a memorable three points victory over old rivals Down.
Peter came into the Cavan team in early 1963 following some outstanding displays for St Patricks College with whom he won McRory Cup medals in 1961 and 1962. He is remembered by colleagues as a great athlete, skilful, and whole-hearted and with a keen positional sense. He played initially in attack before reverting to left full-back where he played most of his football up until the late 1960s. He won Ulster championship medals in 1964, and 1967. He also played with Ulster and he won a Railway Cup medal in 1968. Peter also served his native club Bailieborough with distinction and he played in five Cavan senior championship finals. He played a major role when the club won the Cavan senior championship in 1964.
In the late 1960s Peter emigrated and spent most of his life in London where he provided hospitality and friendship to the many old friends that called to his work place. Although based away he returned to play with Cavan into the early 1970s whenever he was available.
Cavan Co Board GAA extends deepest sympathies to his wife Joan, daughters Dawn and Laura, his brother Patsy in Bailieborough and his sister Sr Kathleen in California and his extended family.
