Passing of Oliver Brady (Lacken)
Cavan Co Board GAA has learned of the passing of Oliver (Ollie) Brady, and we offer our deepest sympathies to his family, Kieran, Gavin, and Sarah; his sister Ettie, brother-in-law John, the extended Brady and Rothwell families and the Lacken club on his passing. Ollie is remembered with affection by his many friends in Lacken and Cavan as an outstanding footballer. He came into the Cavan senior team in the late 1960s winning an Ulster senior championship medal with Cavan in 1969 when they defeated the reigning All-Ireland champions Down in a memorable final in Casement Park. In the all-Ireland semi-final against Offaly in Croke Park, Ollie was sprung from the bench into the forward line, and he made a valuable contribution as Cavan forced a draw. He retained his place for the replay, but Cavan missed out narrowly on a place in the All-Ireland final to a great Offaly team. He is remembered as a skilful, versatile player who was comfortable in either defence or attack, but he usually played as a forward.
Ollie’s contribution to his native club Lacken was immense. He first rose to prominence as a minor winning a Cavan minor championship with Lacken in 1960 and another minor championship medal with the Crosserlough/Lacken amalgamation in 1963. He played on the St Pats team that lost narrowly to Abbey CBS in a McRory Cup final in 1964. He starred on the Lacken team that won the Intermediate championship in 1967. He continued playing for Lacken until he was in his early forties usually lining out at full-forward and he was a noted goal scorer. After he retired from playing, he continued his commitment to Lacken club serving as team-manager on different occasions.
