Club Information

Munterconnaught GFC is a football club based in Ryefield, Munterconnaught, located on the outskirts of Virginia, Co Cavan. The club was originally formed in 1926, but records date the playing of some form of football in Munterconnaught as early as the 1860s. The club caters to all members of the community, including men, women, and children. Many great players have emerged from the ranks of Munterconnaught GFC including Jack Rahill and Fr. Seamus Hetherton who went onto win All Ireland glory with Cavan. The club won the Junior Championship in 1949 but emigration in the 1950s necessitated a sabbatical in the club’s history. Remaining players were forced to play with neighbouring clubs. The club reorganised again in 1969 with Munterconnaught GFC taking its place in Cavan football once again. By 1972 the club reached its first county league final against Killinkere. In 1976 Munterconnaught won its first Junior championship just 7 years after its reconstitution beating Ballinagh in the final.

New facilities arrived with the opening of the revamped clubrooms in St Bartolomew’s Park in 1988. As the local population increased rapidly after the turn of the new century further development of the club’s facilities was required, the official opening of which occurred in August 2012. The new facilities included lighted walking track, covered stand, gym, meeting room, kitchen and a handball court. New generations of local footballers, male and female, now continue to enjoy and thrive in Munterconnaught GFC.
