Scor An Chabhain - Daichead Bliain ag Fás

The GAA’s 125 anniversary is not the only significant milestone being celebrated by the association this year, as 2009 is also the 40thanniversary of the founding of Scór.

Scórwas established in 1969 by the GAA in response to a Cork motion to that year’s annual congress which recommended that the association organise an annual club competition to promote Irish traditional music, song, dance, language and culture.

Scór was first organised in Cavan in the winter of 1973-74 when six clubs took part in competitions at both Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir levels. The first competitions were organised by Andy Brennan NT, Lacken and took place in Legaginny Hall in Ballintemple parish. The experiment quickly proved a success and in that same year the Cornafean Scór na nÓg novelty act won the Ulster final.

In the following years standards continued to improve and there were further Ulster titles for the Cuchulainns Ballad Group (1975), Lil Smith, Cornafean in solo singing (1976) and the Cavan Gaels Scór na nÓg quiz team (1977). By 1978, the number of clubs participating on Scór in Cavan had tripled to a total of 18, and the annual competitions were drawing large attendances to venues around the county. As Scór County Chairman, the late Joe Hegarty (Castletara) played a major role in the success of Scór during these years and he was succeeded as Chairman in 1978 by Paddy McDermott, (Cornafean)

The 1980s was a golden era for Scór in Cavan. Standards continued to improve and capacity attendances thronged venues such as Killeshandra, Ballinagh and Mullahoran halls, while Cavan clubs repeatedly vied for honours with the cream of national talent at both Ulster and All Ireland level. 1981 was a landmark year for Cavan Scór when the Killeshandra Scór na nÓg Novelty Act group won the county’s first Scór All Ireland title and in 1984 the county celebrated a double success when the Cornafean Quiz team and the Cuchullains Set Dancers both won All Ireland titles at the national Scór na nÓg finals in the City Hall in Cork.

Killeshandra were back on the winners rostrum once again in 1985 when they won their second All Ireland title Scór na nÓg in Novelty Act, in the Leisureland Arena in Galway, while in 1986 the Cuchulainns Ballad Group captured Cavan’s first All Ireland Scór Sinsir title, a milestone for Scór in Cavan.
